BARBARA COOK CANCER FOUNDATION DONATES RECORD BREAKING $150,000 TO SOUTH JERSEY HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION AND LIVESTRONG®
October 16, 2012. Vineland, NJ. The Barbara Cook Cancer Foundation (BCCF) donated a record breaking $150,000 in its battle against the deadly disease by presenting checks for $75,000 to both the South Jersey Healthcare Foundation and LIVESTRONG during a check presentation ceremony at the South Jersey Healthcare Foundation office.
BCCF President Robert Karan stated, “We feel a sense of great accomplishment being able to donate $150,000 from the proceeds of this year’s Bill Bottino Mud Run. This is a 50% increase of what was donated last year, and we believe it is the largest one-day fundraising event in the history of Cumberland County. And to be able to do this in these challenging economic times makes it all the sweeter.”
Director of South Jersey Healthcare Foundation Carolyn Heckman stated, “I want to thank the Barbara Cook Foundation for another very successful event this year. What a wonderful tribute to Barbara Cook and to Bill Bottino to bring the community together for such a noble cause and to have some fun as well. South Jersey Healthcare is so grateful to be a recipient of the profit from this event. Cancer is no respecter of persons and it has taken the lives of two wonderful people, Barb and Bill. We treat patients everyday suffering from various types of cancer. Together with the many other institutions that are participating in research, we will find a cure.”
“We’re so grateful to the participants of the Bill Bottino Mud Run,” said Doug Ulman, president and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. “We never could have dreamed we’d have the number of dedicated supporters and volunteers worldwide to serve so many people and families affected by cancer when the foundation began 15 years ago. With the help of organizations like the Bill Bottino Mud Run, survivorship has become a household word, and that is truly great progress.”
Cindy Kneiser Walker, local LIVESTRONG representative and BCCF Board member exclaimed, “We are so inspired by the individuals and teams that fundraised for the event and helped us to raise an additional $30,000 for these worthy organizations. All of this money will go a long way in supporting people facing cancer. It is wonderful to know that anyone can get free help from LIVESTRONG, in Spanish or English, simply by calling 855-220-7777 or visiting LIVESTRONG.org.”
Donald Fauerbach, BCCF Vice-President reported that the number of participants nearly double from the previous year. “The weather was perfect, and with over 1900 participants, three live bands, a DJ, great BBQ and a wonderful Kids Zone, the New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt Raceway became a wonderful atmosphere of fun and fundraising,” stated Fauerbach.
It is believed that the 5th annual Barbara Cook Cancer Foundation’s Bill Bottino Mud Run is one of the top one-day cancer fundraising events in the state of New Jersey held by all volunteers. Karan noted, “The perfect combination of having a dedicated committee, incredible in-kind supporters and amazing volunteers, plus major sponsors and especially the Bottino family involvement makes all of this possible. We’ve already started planning for a bigger and better event for 2013. We expect to be announcing plans soon for an amazing 2013 event.”
Bottino’s ShopRite provided an initial $75,000 donation from their summer long cancer fundraising efforts that included four days of special events at their Millville, Vineland, Upper Deerfield Township and Washington Township stores respectively. Jim Bottino, President of Bottino ShopRite Stores and brother of Bill Bottino, Sr., also thanks the loyal customers and vendors for their support in this major fundraiser.
The 2013 date will again be held at New Jersey Motorsports Park and the actual date will be confirmed before the end of the year. For updates on the event and date, visit www.BarbaraCookCancerFoundation.org.
