Winter Autocross Series To Debut At New Jersey Motorsports Park

Millville, N.J. (November 11, 2009) -

A new autocross series will debut this winter at New Jersey Motorsports Park as a four-race season, providing a cold-weather alternative for racers and an entry-level option for those new to the sport.

The open series will run at New Jersey Motorsports Park in conjunction with the South Jersey Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), but SCCA membership is not a requirement for entry. The four race season will open on December 5, 2009, and include January 9, February 6, and March 6, 2010 events.

The winter series will run each race on a different, challenging configuration in the Lightning Raceway paddock. Autocross events run one car at a time on a tight, twisty course typically set-up in open paved areas. Courses are laid out with cones, allowing a different course at each event.

Cars are separated into classes, with the winners determined through time trials.Awards will be provided to the top three in each class at each race, as well as overall champions at the end of the season.

To participate, each driver needs only a car and a helmet. It’s not unusual for autocrossers to compete in the same cars driven to the event, making autocross the perfect entry-level motorsports activity.

Additionally, portions of the $35 entry fee to each winter series event will benefit a pair of worthy causes. Entrants in the season opener can receive $5 off the entry fee by bringing a new child’s winter coat to benefit the New Jersey Motorsports Park Coats For Kids drive, which provides coats, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens to local school children in need. As required by the Coats For Kids Foundation, all coats must be new and include the tags, but can range in size from Youth 2Y to Women’s and Men’s 2X.

The latter three events will benefit Laps to Conquer MS. New Jersey Motorsports Park will donate $5 from each entry fee to the Laps to Conquer MS fund, which uses motorsports to increase awareness of multiple sclerosis and raise money for the national MS society.

The winter series will run under SCCA Solo rules, with officiating from the South Jersey region. More information on the South Jersey Region of the SCCA is available at www.sjr-scca.org.
